BONDING

maremma pup bonding with lambsThe bonding of a Maremma should start as early as 3-4 weeks of age, and is primarily a matter of raising a livestock guarding pup or dog with it’s intended “family” species. Sheep, goats, family and farm pets are of course the most common at present. The early bonding process and development prior to the purchase of a dog is extremely important and only reputable, experienced breeders will know how to deal with the procedures involved in the early weeks or months of a pups development.

The basics of bonding a 6-8 week old pup can be as simple as penning up to 6 or more young lambs or kids in a “pup proof” area, away from your house. This can be the size of a large back yard, with shade, shelter, food and fresh water. Maremma guarding the flockEnsure you intend to incorporate the pups “friends” in with your main flock later, and also ensure the main flock will be in constant view of the pup. Having a water trough, mineral block or supplementary feeding troughs on the puppy enclosures fence line will draw other flock members near the pup.
This basically will cover the next 8-16 weeks of the bonding process.

Ongoing assistance, if required, is always given with all Flockmaster puppies sold
