BREED DESCRIPTION
The Maremma is a majestic powerful dog. He is very hardy and has been bred to adapt to a variety of harsh conditions. He is not prone to illness or disease, needing only normal vaccinations and worming. He is white in colour, with a medium to heavy double coat which can have ivory or fawn shadings at the base of the tail and on the ears. The male should have a thicker ruff or mane around the neck and shoulder area. The nose, pads, lips and eye rims must always be black. Black pigment on the skin and dark toe nails are also highly desirable.
The Maremma being a medium to large dog should weigh 30-45 kg and measure 60-73 cm in height, at maturity. His body should be longer in length than height, but still show good balance. He should be well muscled and well boned, and must have strong white teeth set square to the jaw, with a good scissor bite, ie. upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth. The Maremma attains maturity at the age of 12-18 months, and their life expectancy is 12-14 years.
